Abstract
A well-born, but orphaned, young Greek woman from Constantinople, Despina Basaraba, migrated to Rome in 1598 with her French renegade husband and their three-year old son. With some social capital, but limited material resources and few contacts in the very foreign city, Despina, with her family, set about networking to build a new life. She cultivated ties with women of modest and higher social ranks and won the official patronage of the pope and the personal charity of his household steward. A trial record of Despina’s prosecution five years later for presumption of adultery lets us reconstruct in rare detail everyday connections, special alliances, and the occasional use of writing in face-to-face relationships. The story documents her gendered vulnerabilities, but also her resilient social agency.
