Abstract
Although collaboration between dental team members is a cornerstone of modern clinical practice, 1 dental assisting (DA) and predoctoral dental (DMD/DDS) programs have traditionally been conducted in isolation.2 To begin incorporating intraprofessional learning opportunities, 1,3 our College of Dentistry adopted an integrated clinical model wherein DA and DMD students care for patients together.At the preclinical level, however, students continued receiving didactic and practical education in their separate cohorts.Even fundamental knowledge courses such as infection control were taught independently, despite sharing similar content.Not only was this inefficient in terms of faculty assignment, but it sometimes resulted in students learning different clinic protocols, generating confusion during patient appointments.
