Abstract
La référence à la folie demeure un opérateur incontournable pour affirmer l’impossibilité d’étudier ce qu’on appelle couramment les « troubles sévères et persistants » seulement en termes de pathologies mentales, psychiques ou psychiatriques. Dès l’apparition des premiers asiles explicitement destinés aux fous jusqu’aux catégorisations psychopathologiques des manuels de psychiatrie contemporains, en passant par les innombrables récits littéraires, fresques picturaux et discours philosophiques, les tentatives de cerner l’univers de la folie amènent à des réponses diverses et contrastées. Pour ne citer que Pascal (1652-1653): « Les hommes sont si nécessairement fous, que ce serait être fou par un autre tour de folie de n’être pas fou ». Si la folie est incontournable, comment cerner cette expérience universelle en termes sociaux et culturels?
