Abstract
In 1979, Doris Weber of Stratford, Ontario, became the first Mennonite woman to be ordained to ministry within her denomination in Canada.Just a year prior, Martha Smith Good of Kitchener was commissioned to this role, a status that was different more in ritual and semantics than in actual function.The ordination of a woman to formal church ministry that year represented what some considered to be "the last barrier of overt discrimination against women in the North American Mennonite churches. . . ." 1 In assuming leadership roles within Mennonite congregations, both women crossed historic barriers that had made it impossible for women to follow career and spiritual aspirations as ministers in Mennonite churches.Also in 1979, the changing identity of Mennonite women was symbolized with the arrival of a group of Hmong people from Laos, after several years of living as refugees in Thailand following the Vietnam war.Having been sponsored by Mennonite churches in Ontario, the Hmong soon formed their own Christian church congregation and began services at the First Mennonite Church in Kitchener. 2 The presence of Mennonite women with a cultural background that was Hmong and Laotian added to the increasing ethnic diversity that would characterize Mennonite women-Mennonites generally -towards the end of the twentieth century.Today this diversity is most vividly
