Abstract
sylvia van kirk's landmark study "Many Tender Ties": Women in Fur-Trade Society in Western Canada, 1670-1870 grapples with the many ways that gender and sexuality shaped colonial economies of western North America.Her narrative concludes in the mid-nineteenth century, when the arrival of elite, white women to Red River was reconfiguring social hierarchies.As European traders adopted the new racial ideology that marked white women as signifiers of civilization, many men abandoned their Aboriginal-ancestry wives and children, leaving those families without economic, legal, or social support.Van Kirk's story ends with newly articulated racial cleavages rupturing relations between European and Aboriginal women just as agricultural settlement was about to supplant the fur trade as the dominant economy of western Canada.In recent decades, feminist historians have extended Van Kirk's analysis to consider how relations of race and gender underpinned the colonialization of, and colonial societies in, western Canada after 1860.Scholars such as Carter, Perry, Rutherdale, and Burnett have explored the spatial and legal constraints placed on First Nations women; the diverse genres of masculinity possible on colonial frontiers; the work of Euro-Canadian missionaries, teachers, and nurses in Aboriginal communities; and travellers' tales of "exotic" Indigenous women and men. 1 Such research has drawn on feminist and post-colonial theory to
