Abstract
Significance As Trudeau’s approval ratings continue to decline, a Conservative victory at the next election on a scale capable of producing a majority government looks increasingly possible. However, Trudeau is unlikely to give up the Liberal leadership prematurely, having already won two elections from a trailing position, and he has no clear challenger for it. Impacts A new centrist party, Centre Ice Canadians, is unlikely to win seats but may complicate the electoral picture in individual districts. A Liberal loss would see centre-right Liberals drifting to the Conservatives and progressives to the NDP as Canada becomes more polarised. Federal support for new oil sands projects and related pipelines would resume under the Conservatives. A Conservative government would increase defence spending but this is unlikely to reach 2% of GDP, which is the NATO target.
