Ouverte en 1938, La Binerie Mont-Royal est un petit restaurant de quartier du Plateau Mont-Royal à Montréal. Cet établissement ordinaire et sans prétention est devenu célèbre dans les années 1980 grâce au roman et au film Le Matou. Depuis, il est une destination touristique décrite dans les guides imprimés comme un lieu d’un autre temps permettant de déguster une authentique cuisine québécoise. Par l’analyse des discours médiatiques sur La Binerie, cet article explore le processus de construction de l’image de ce restaurant comme lieu d’attraction incarnant tradition et identité alimentaire. L’émergence de cette identité ne peut toutefois se comprendre sans être resituée dans un contexte général de quête identitaire nationale, de repositionnement de la gastronomie québécoise et de renaissance d’un quartier populaire.
