Abstract
In 1972, Margaret Atwood published her book “Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature”. Using a big number of facts, Atwood made a deep insight into the history of both English and French-Canadian literatures, compared them with American and European literary traditions as well as based her observations on an original concept, thus creating an invaluable introduction to Canadian literature for a wider public. In this article, we are going to give a brief review of the book which is practically unknown in Russia, focusing on the way Atwood interpreted such multicultural and quite little-known then issues as images of the First Nations and immigrants.
