Abstract
THE planning for the Manitoba Historical Society's 125th anniversary in 2004, and the royalties will be used to help fund anniversary events.This collection is intended to celebrate one of the society's important achievements-the Transactions-and to draw attention to these authors, all interesting individuals who played important roles in building our province.I wish to acknowledge the enormous amount of hard work put into this project by David Carr, Patricia Sanders, and Sharon Caseburg at University of Manitoba Press.The staff of the Manitoba Legislative Library and the Provincial Archives of Manitoba, and of that group I would mention especially Chris Kotecki, have given much invaluable help.The Transactions printed here were published over a period of more than forty years, and different printers and individuals were involved in preparing them for their original publication.Because of that, these pieces display a variety of spellings, punctuation, and grammar.In particular, names are often spelled in different ways, and no accents are used in the originals in French names or words.Sometimes even within one Transaction, the usage is inconsistent.Thus, for instance, spellings of the "North West Company," the Hudson's Bay Company," or "pemmican" vary widely.I have chosen to reprint these pieces as
