Abstract
El año pasado fue el centenario del descubrimiento de la insulina, celebrado en la Universidad de Toronto, Canadá, gracias a los trabajos de investigación de Frederick Banting y Charles Best, con la colaboración de James Collip y John Macleod. Tal fue el impacto que, en 1923, Banting y Mcleod fueron galardonados con el premio Nobel de Medicina. Desde entonces la insulina exógena constituye el principal tratamiento sustitutivo hormonal en pacientes insulinodependientes o insulinorequirientes. Aunque este tratamiento funciona exitosamente en la mayoría de los pacientes, existe un grupo que no logra los objetivos metabólicos adecuados y está expuesto a episodios de hiperglucemia o hipoglucemia que, a largo plazo, determinan la aparición de complicaciones secundarias de la diabetes mellitus (DM) o son causa de descompensación y muerte.
