Abstract
The main thoroughfares into family history are the on-line censuses available through The National Archives website. By the next census in 1861, all but three of the family including the two who were at school in 1851, had vanished. Atomisation of contemporary society may be true, but it is certainly nothing new. Even within the United Kingdom, many people, particularly those born in rural areas, left their place of birth in search of work in the fast expanding towns. Personal encounters can affect people, not just when their ancestors were caught up in such horrifying events as the Western Front or the holocaust, but also in the sweep of history that we take for granted. The Library and Archives of Canada places its Canadian Genealogy Centre at the top of the list of its online resources, with a mission: ‘To facilitate the discovery of our roots and family histories as a basic part of our Canadian heritage.
