Abstract
Abstract For decades Canadian musical theatre writers hoped to conquer New York and/or London, without much luck. These attempts have included such ‘flops’ as Rockabye Hamlet, Billy Bishop Goes to War, and The Story of My Life. The essay discusses the general history of musicals originating in Canada and how they were exported. It also explores why after many years of trying, two shows—The Drowsy Chaperone and Come from Away—succeeded on Broadway within a relatively short period of time.
