A seleção de materiais para embalagens de café é o ponto central deste artigo, contextualizado no mercado brasileiro, maior produtor e um dos maiores consumidores mundiais. As formas de apresentação das embalagens ao consumidor, a amplitude de público e o envolvimento de produtores e marcas permitem ilustrar as cadeias de produção e consumo e as etapas do ciclo de vida dos produtos. A metodologia empregada é qualitativa, partindo da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, referente ao mercado de café e ao uso de materiais no desenvolvimento de embalagens, passando à síntese gráfica das cadeias para identificação de etapas e fluxos que permitiram indicar fatores de influência para seleção de materiais nos projetos de design. Como conclusão apontou-se a possibilidade de replicar esses fatores para outros mercados, com maior ou menor impacto.
