Abstract

This study examines how elementary students engaged in knowledge building discourse about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as interconnected systems.Students participated in online discourse and constructed models to represent collective understanding.Results show that students consider a system as connected components that work together; collaborative discourse helped them identify elements and processes within and across SDGs that were incorporated into their models.Students engaged in systems thinking to some extent, as reflected in identifying components and relationships; discussion of cycles and loops was rare.Ongoing work explores effects of scaffolds to facilitate engagement with more advanced systems concepts and use of models to drive deeper inquiry.
