Abstract
Alcohol-related problems are not alone in demanding a community response, and the movement towards such a response in the alcohol field should be seen as part of a number of overlapping and more general movements in the direction. The number of people who will admit to regular heavy drinking is considerably greater, however, whilst the number known to agencies as having problems related to alcohol is very much smaller, and the number admitted to psychiatric facilities for the treatment of alcohol problems is smaller still. Non-hospital forms of alcohol detoxification service include residential detoxification centres and home detoxification. There is agreement, that detoxification must still be intensive, thorough, monitored constantly and regularly, and must involve an effective screening process. Small therapeutic hostels or halfway houses for people with drinking problems were a major community service development in the 1960s in Britain, Canada and the USA.
