Abstract
Consacré au tombeau médiéval, ce chapitre retrace l’évolution de son décor iconographique et ornemental afin d’y lire le changement de paradigme que l’institutionnalisation du purgatoire opère dans les rapports entre les vivants et les morts à partir du XIIIe siècle. Contrairement à ceux qui précèdent cette mutation et qui témoignent d’une attitude confiante envers le destin des défunts, les monuments funéraires de la fin du Moyen Âge se développent de manière à communiquer la logique et les mécanismes d’une « nouvelle » liturgie des morts résolument guidée par une vision comptable du salut individuel. La transformation du décor architectural des dalles funéraires et son intégration de figures d’intercesseurs opèrent ainsi une mise en ordre et une explicitation de la dynamique transitive devant mener l’âme du défunt vers l’au-delà. À terme, sa complexification et sa disparition lorsque squelettes et transis sont présents ajoutent au tombeau une dimension esthétique dont les effets rhétoriques peuvent susciter davantage l’adhésion du spectateur et l’amener à intercéder pour le salut du défunt.
