Abstract
Abstract Ater A Period of obscurity in the middle of the eleventh century, by the last quarter the dynasty of Olaf Cuaran had gained a new prominence in the kingship of the Isles. Medieval writers assigned the triumph to Godred Crovan. When he briefly added Dublin to his domain in the waning years of the century, the Irish Sea Vikings gained a few final years of glory. More important, Godred established his dynasty in one of the few places where they could flourish. His island empire was too poor and remote for the great princes surrounding him. They busied themselves with more profitable and convenient prey. Godred could hurl defiance to one and all from his island redoubts.
