Abstract
Abstract Several non-atherosclerotic vascular diseases can cause ischemic stroke. When compared with atherosclerosis and cardioembolism, the number of persons with stroke secondary to non-atherosclerotic vasculopathies is relatively small. In one clinical trial, stroke attributed to nonatherosclerotic vasculopathies accounted for less than 5% of cases. Although these disorders can occur in any age group, the impact of non-atherosclerotic vasculopathies is most prominent in young adults and children because atherosclerosis is relatively uncommon in this population. Non-atherosclerotic vasculopathies can be categorized as non-inflammatory, infectious, and inflammatory but non-infectious (Table 7-1).
