Effects of wall roughness on the cellular pattern evolution and failure of gaseous detonations

Abstract
In this study, the effects of rough-walled tubes on the propagation and failure of gaseous detonation are being investigated numerically. When a cellular detonation propagates in a tube with rough-wall boundary conditions, apart from the losses, its unstable cellular frontal structure is significantly modified due to gasdynamic perturbations by the rough wall, resulting in velocity deficit (or the presence of a quasi-detonation) and eventually failure. The latter is the focus of this study, i.e., how are the intrinsic cellular pattern of the detonation and its reacting gasdynamic flow fields changed by the presence of wall roughness? To simplify the computational modelling effort while revealing some salient unstable characteristics of cellular detonations propagating in rough tubes, the strategy adopted in this study is to conduct numerical simulations using an ideal-gas, reactive flow model given by the inviscid Euler equations with a simplified two-step chemical kinetic model. The effects of the chemical sensitivity of the combustible mixture, channel width, and various degrees of roughness using different obstacle sizes on the intrinsic cellular detonation instability and propagation limits are investigated through a detailed parametric study.
