Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Psychiatry was launched in 1988. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of psychiatry is divided into 13 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Tetsuro SakaiTetsuro SakaiMedicine and a Professor of the Clinical Translational Science Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition, he is Vice-Chair for Faculty Promotion and Development at the Department. He is also a board-certified staff anesthesiologist (Hepatic and Intestinal Transplantation Anesthesia) in the UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Sakai earned his MD and his PhD (cardiovascular surgery) from Kyoto University in Japan. After internship and cardiovascular surgery residency at Tenri Hospital (an affiliated hospital of Kyoto University), Dr. Sakai completed both clinical and research fellowships at the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Toronto Hospital, the University of Toronto before relocating to Pittsburgh in 1999. Gerald BrandacherGerald BrandacherDr. Gerald Brandacher is Professor of Translational and Experimental Transplant Surgery, Executive Vice Chair for Research and Co-Director of the Department of Visceral, Transplant, and Thoracic Surgery, and Scientific Director of the Daniel Swarovski Transplantation Research Laboratory at Innsbruck Medical University, He is also a professor in the Departments of Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and serves as the Scientific Director of the reconstructive transplantation program at Johns Hopkins. Prior to re-joining the Medical University of Innsbruck in 2023, Dr. Brandacher was scientific director, and a key member of the reconstructive transplant programs at the University of Pittsburgh and at Johns Hopkins University. At these programs he was instrumental in designing a novel cell-based immunomodulatory treatment protocol for VCA and was also part of the surgical team performing the first bilateral hand transplant and first forearm transplant in the US. In 2018 Dr. Brandacher was a core member of the team executing the world's first total male genital transplant. His main scientific interests are donor-specific immune tolerance and immunomonitoring strategies as well as tissue and organ cryopreservation. Dr. Brandacher received his medical degree summa cum laude from Leopold Franzens University, Innsbruck, School of Medicine, and completed further surgical training at the Center of Operative Medicine, Department of Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery, at Innsbruck Medical University. He is the recipient of many prestigious national and international awards related to his work in reconstructive transplantation including The Young Investigator Awards of the American Society of Transplantation and the European Society of Organ Transplantation, The Young Innovator Award of the American Society of Transplantation and the Excellence in Research Award of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Brandacher has mentored 80 pre- and post-doctoral researches over the past 20 years, and has authored more than 270 peer reviewed papers, 27 book chapters, and has edited two textbooks on hand transplantation. In 2014, he co-founded the journal Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (VCA), and currently serves as its Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Brandacher is principal- or co-investigator of multiple major federal research grants totaling >25 M USD in funding on projects related to upper extremity transplantation, cell-based immune modulation, and advanced organ preservation. He has given over 220 invited lectures and has been a visiting professor around the world and at leading American medical institutions. Dr. Brandacher has served as the President of the Austrian Society of Surgical Research (2008-2009) and as Chair of the American Society of Transplantation (AST) Vascular Composite Allotransplantation Advisory Council (2014-15). He was elected as Chair of the Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Committee of the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT) in 2015, and is a Founding Member of the American Society of Reconstructive Transplantation (ASRT), for which he currently serves as immediate Past President. He has been a Member at Large to the OPTN/UNOS Vascularized Composite Allograft Transplantation (VCA) Committee. In 2015 Dr. Brandacher was selected as a “Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation”. Hector Ramos Dr Ramos is a Graduate of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Caribbean Cardiovascular Clinic in Ponce Puerto Rico. Fellowships in Kidney transplantation at U.S.C. and Liver Transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Pittsburgh under Dr. Thomas Starzl. Has headed and founded two transplant programs at University of New Mexico and Tampa General Hospital. Masters in healthcare ethics from Creighton University and has published several articles on ethical issues in medicine and transplantation. Currently, Professor of Clinical Surgery at Keck USC School of Medicine and Service chief of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Los Angeles General Medical Center, also serving on Ethics resource committee. Ethics consultant of Division of Transplantation at USC department of Surgery. Chair of Bioethics and Vice President for Medical affairs in surgery at PIH Good Samaritan hospital and is a certified healthcare ethics consultant.
