Abstract
The orange blossom wheat midge (wheat midge), Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is one of the most significant pests of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. (Family: Poaceae)) in western Canada. Native to Europe, wheat midge has spread throughout the world to leading wheat-producing countries including Canada and the USA. In Canada, outbreaks of wheat midge in the 1980s resulted in tens of millions of dollars in yield losses and control costs, and it continues to be an annual threat across the Canadian Prairies. Since the 1980s, significant progress has been made on integrated pest management strategies against wheat midge. Here, we review the history of invasion and current geographic distribution of wheat midge in Canada, its biology and life cycle, economic importance and damage, and integrated pest management strategies for its control. © The Authors 2023
