Statsgjeldens historie er lang og brokete, fra greske bystaters mislighold i det 4. århundre før kristus, til dagens gjeldsproblemer i Europa og USA. Land har mistet sin uavhengighet og blitt angrepet militært for ikke å ha klart sine forpliktelser. Newfoundland mistet sin uavhengighet så sent som på 1930-tallet på grunn av mislighold av gjeld, mens Venezuela ble utsatt for militærblokade noen tiår tidligere. Hellas har en statsgjeld på rundt 140 prosent av BNP, men land har misligholdt på nivåer langt lavere enn det.
