Neste artigo, René Unda Lara, doutor em Ciências Sociais e diretor do Centro de Infância, Adolescência e Juventude da Universidade Politécnica Salesiana do Equador, junto com Maria Fernanda Solórzano Granada, pesquisadora desta mesma instituição, analisam a presença e a importância das juventudes indígenas a partir de 2007, quando da instalação do governo da Revolução Cidadã no Equador. Este cenário político e cultural transformador possibilita expor as contradições e tensões que têm constituído a experiência de ser jovem nas diferentes comunidades indígenas equatorianas. Segundo os autores, embora a expansão da obrigatoriedade escolar tenha permitido ganhos importantes para estes jovens, outras demandas se impõem, como a de ter que conjugar seus valores rurais tradicionais com a adesão e o pertencimento ao modo de ser urbano, frente a condicionantes como o movimento de migração para as cidades, e a diversificação das demandas em relação à força de trabalho. Um aspecto importante analisado neste artigo reside na participação ativa dos jovens na reconstrução do movimento indígena no Equador a partir de 2006. Participação esta que não se faz sem problemas, um dos quais constitui o enfrentamento da estrutura de poder comunal indígena que dispõe da autoridade como prerrogativa da geração mais velha.
