Abstract
Abstract In the most remarkable living examples of adaptive radiation, the span of resources utilized by the taxon surpasses typical bounds to include items normally taken by unrelated taxa missing or poorly represented in the region. For example, in addition to ordinary seeds finches on remote archipelagoes take foods otherwise exploited by warblers, woodpeckers, and honeyeaters in more diverse mainland faunas. The marsupial mammals attain their highest diversity in Australia where placental mammals are underrepresented, and the vast array of phenotypes to have evolved there include likenesses of wolves, shrews, moles, and other types of placental mammals that roam the other continents.
