Abstract
Abstract Microsporidia are a highly diverse group of obligate intracellular parasites, closely related to fungi, with a number of unique characteristics which have simultaneously sparked interest in the cell, molecular, and evolutionary biology of the group, and at the same time hindered our understanding because of the unusual nature of these parasites on many levels. With the exception of their complex infection apparatus, they are relatively simple cells that have lost or reduced a variety of structures.
