Abstract
Abstract Stendhal ’s novel The Abbess of Castro tells the story of two young aristocrats, Héle`ne and Jules, in sixteenth-century Naples. After falling in love and encountering the disapproval of their families, they are separated from each other and Héle`ne is obliged to enter a convent and become a nun. In a desperate attempt to see his beloved again, Jules goes to the convent of the Visitation now her new home in the nearby city of Castro: The day after, just before dawn, he entered the walls of the small city of Castro; even before entering the city, Jules saw the convent of the Visitation, a vast building circumscribed by black walls, and very similar to an army quarter. He ran into the church; it was marvellous.
