Abstract
Abstract The Lie group SO(3) plays a double role in the mechanics of the rigid body: it is the configuration space, and it is also the symmetry group of the Lagrangian. This allows us to introduce a specific procedure for obtaining the reduced dynamics on the quotient space TSO(3)/SO(3). This procedure, called Euler–Poincaré reduction, applies to arbitrary Lie groups, which makes it powerful in a variety of applications. For instance, we will apply it in later chapters in the study of pseudo-rigid bodies and fluids.
