Abstract
Abstract Although questions about the pertinence of universal values go back far into history, the last quarter of the twentieth century, and particularly the 1990s, saw the emergence of a quite distinctive discourse around the issue of globalization. This was impelled by various factors, the most conspicuous of which were revolutions in communications technology which made the transfer of ideas and commodities across national frontiers much easier, and which in turn left the economies of nation-states more exposed to rapid transfers of global capital by transnational corporations and others.
