Abstract Writing The Closing Lines of The Mind of the South “in the fateful year of 1940;” W. J. Cash would “venture no definite prophecies:’ but he clearly sensed that America’s inevitable conflict with fascism might set the stage for the South’s own inevitable day of reckoning with the rest of America, and in fact, it did just that. George Orwell contended that “if the war didn’t kill you, it was bound to start you thinking.” In reality, many southerners, black and white, were already thinking, particularly about the South, well before World War II. The combination of”New Deal idealism” and the ascendant “critical realism” that marked much of southern thought during the 1930s had combined to produce what Ralph McGill described as a “mighty surge of discussion, debate, self-examination, confession and release.”
