Abstract
Complex patterns of behavior that appear with chronic mental and physical disorders often reflect disturbances in the individual's hierarchical circadian regulation. Atop this hierarchy, circadian clocks enable the anticipation of regular, daily conditions. However, conditions that are transient or unexpected require alternative, short term memory mechanisms. In this context, goal directed behaviors predict the caluculated performance that produces specific, expected results. We pursue the notion that responsivity and regulation lead to optimal behavioral output and that the direct regulation of behavior is based on the likelihood that it they will be successful.
