Abstract

Estrogens and oxytocin (OT) have been shown to play important roles in mediating social recognition (SR), the ability to distinguish between conspecifics, and therefore it has been hypothesized that the estrogen and OT systems interact. This interaction was proposed to occur by estrogens binding to their receptors in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus (PVN and SON), where the majority of OT is produced in the brain, to facilitate the production/release of OT. The released OT will then bind to the OT receptor (OTR) in the medial amygdala (MeA), which also receives direct projections from the olfactory bulbs.
