Abstract
Reelin is an extracellular matrix protein that regulates neural migration and dendritic sprouting during brain development, and neural plasticity in the adult brain. Reelin is also expressed in periphery where is primarily observed in blood plasma. Reelin downregulation has been observed in post-mortem brain samples of several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. During the recent past our laboratory has evaluated the possibility that intrahippocampal or peripheral injections of Reelin would be able to rescue, behavioural, neurochemical, electrophysiological, and peripheral alterations induced by repeated-corticosterone (40mg/kg for 21 days) in a rodent model of chronic stress with a behavioural/neurochemical phenotype that mimics some alterations observed in major depression.
