Abstract
Obesity is a growing problem worldwide with significant health, educational, and social impact.Early experiences play a decisive role in shaping adult behavior.While it is known that maternal obesity can determine offspring's predisposition to overweight, heart disease, diabetes, or hypertension, it is still yet unclear how it affects eating behavior and diet selection.It can be foreseen that prenatal exposure to high-calorie diets can be expected to develop postnatal taste preferences and/or changes in the reinforcing value of sweet taste leading to increased intake of sweets and fats, thus having a causal role in obesity.This issue is especially important during adolescence, a critical and peculiar period that will largely determine subsequent adult performance.Understanding the effect of Western diets (high-fat and high-sugar diets), during early development on the formation of taste preferences may be critical to fight against this global pandemic.In this experimental series, four groups of pregnant female Wistar rats were fed different diets (high sucrose and fat; high sucrose; high fat or standard) for one month before mating and throughout gestation.Offspring taste preferences were evaluated during adolescence in addition to a battery of behavioral tests including spontaneous exploration, and spatial memory.Offspring from mothers fed Western diets accepted low concentration and rejected high concentrations of sucrose solutions.This is consistent with lower weight in this group, supporting better eating behavior regulation.These results suggest that prenatal influences can shape long-term preferences and may have beneficial effects on diet selection and caloric management.
