Abstract
Abstract Worldwide environmental conditions have changed more rapidly in the past half- century than at any other time in human history, shaped and strained by economic, social, and military exploits. Increases in agricultural output have been accompanied by pollution from fertilizers, pesticides, and excessive irrigation. Wars have displaced millions of people, with weapons producing dangerous radiation and chemical toxins. Continuing to this day, manufacture of high-demand disposable electronics generates harmful waste; oil drilling and spills challenge ecosystems, and destroy bird and fish habitats; coal mining denudes mountainsides and its by- products threaten water and wildlife; and the burning of fossil fuels contaminates and heats the earth’s atmosphere.
