Depuis quelques années, on observe au Québec une polarisation aigüe au sujet de questions telles que l’identité, la laïcité et la place de la religion dans les institutions publiques, le racisme, etc. Après avoir rappelé les principes proposés Edgar Morin pour étudier la complexité, nous proposons une lecture épistémologique/ méthodologique de certaines de ces controverses qui concernent l’islam. Nous élargissons quelque peu le principe dialogique de Morin pour aborder des logiques qui ne font pas partie d’un même système. La rencontre de deux processus relevant de logiques différentes qui produisent un même comportement a comme conséquences, entre autres, celle de rendre difficile des prises de position politiques tout à fait cohérentes. Les acteurs politiques, favorisant la cohérence plutôt que l’incohérence, ont alors tendance à adopter une position de déni face aux logiques qui produisent des significations différentes de celles qu’ils adoptent. Le dialogue social devient alors impossible. Les principes proposés par Morin permettent de concevoir l’aspect nécessairement paradoxal d’un même phénomène social, et ouvrir la porte à une discussion plus nuancée du phénomène.
