Abstract

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) mediates glucose entrance into the arcuate nucleus (ARC) thus lowering glycemia at the onset of sleep phase. Vasopressin release from SCN neurons (SCNVP) increases the glucose transporter GLUT1 expression in tanycytes projecting into the ARC resulting in increased glucose levels in the ARC and in low circulating glucose. Inadequate sleep is linked to disturbances in glucose metabolism; and sleep loss may induce a pre-diabetic condition. We hypothesized that sleep delay influences SCN neuronal activity, thus promoting changes in glucose transport into the ARC mediated by tanycytes.
