Abstract
The photoreceptor sensory ending, known as the outer segment (OS), is a modified cilium filled with photopigment-laden membranous disks. Surrounding the base of the OS are calyceal processes (CPs), microvilli-like protrusions with an actin core. While CP disruption has been associated with altered OS morphology and loss of vision, the role of the processes remains elusive. In this project, we use zebrafish as a model to investigate the structure, development, and dynamics of CPs. By analyzing immunostained sections of the adult zebrafish retina, we have determined CP number, absolute length, length relative to OS height, width, and organization.
