Abstract Henry Ford II, 1946: ‘If we can solve the problem of human relations in industrial production, we can make as much progress toward lower costs in the next 10 years as we made during the past quarter century through the development of the machinery of mass production.’ By the middle of the twentieth century, industrial social science had become one of the most pregnant of the many devices available to America’s managers in their struggle with costs and labor, government and the consuming public. But, even then, industrial social science remained richer in its promise than in its accomplishments, impressive as these had been.
