Abstract
Canada’s geography, vast and diversified, has been greatly shaped by successive ice ages over millions of years. The resulting land mass of the Canadian interior is a plain-like surface stretching from the high Arctic to the USA border. Traditionally there are six regions in Canada, regions which have a character of their own through the interplay of geography and settlement: the Atlantic provinces. Canada is a land of immigrants. The French were the first Europeans to explore and settle in Canada, beginning in the sixteenth century. In the nineteenth century, the building of the transcontinental railway opened the western prairies to thousands of settlers from Europe and completed the link with the colony of British Columbia on the Pacific coast. The Atlantic provinces were settled mainly by British immigrants, but the population of New Brunswick is now nearly half French. Canada has a federal constitution established in 1867 by an act of the British Parliament, the British North America Act.
