Abstract
This chapter, and the following two chapters, describe specific decay processes that unstable nuclei can undergo. The present chapter considers alpha decay, that is the emission of an alpha particle, i.e., <sup>4</sup>He nucleus from an unstable nucleus. The basic theory of alpha decay as a quantum mechanical tunneling process is described. The effects of angular momentum conservation on alpha decay rates are discussed in terms of the spin states of the parent and daughter nuclei.
