Abstract
This chapter reviews gamma-decay, that is the emission of a photon during the transition of an excited nuclear state to a lower energy state. The classical theory of multipole radiation is described in the context of electric and magnetic character of the transition. A quantum mechanical approach is used to describe decay rates in terms of the conservation of angular momentum. Finally, internal conversion, which is a process by which the transition energy results in the emission of an atomic electron rather than a gamma-ray, is discussed.
