Abstract
Chapter 9 provides a description of beta decay processes. The chapter begins with a consideration of the energetics of the three processes: β− decay, β+ decay and electron capture. This analysis quantifies the processes introduced in chapter 4 in the context of the liquid drop model. The Fermi theory of beta decay is presented with the goal of calculating the energy spectrum of the electrons or positrons that are emitted. Allowed and forbidden decays are discussed in the context of angular momentum considerations and the resulting decay rates. Finally, parity violation during beta decay and double beta decay are considered.
