Abstract
À mi-chemin entre la marionnette, l’instrument de percussion et le jouet, le pantin gigueur est connu depuis le milieu du xixe siècle sous diverses appellations : bonhomme gigueur au Canada français, jig doll en Angleterre et limberjack aux États-Unis. Certains le croient issu de l’ancienne marionnette à la planchette qui a circulé en Europe dès le xvie siècle. À défaut d’en retracer les origines exactes, objectif irréaliste pour la plupart des objets issus de la tradition orale, Monique Jutras offre un bilan détaillé des recherches qui lui ont permis de retracer le parcours de ce petit gigueur en bois exceptionnel. Objet d’art populaire fascinant, autant des points de vue ethnologique qu’artistique, le pantin gigueur représente un sujet d’étude pratiquement inédit malgré sa relative ancienneté.
