Abstract
Fréquemment assimilé à un banal québécisme familier, le nom masculin pichou est pourtant riche d’une histoire de plus de trois siècles. Cet autochtonisme lexical, emprunté par le français à des langues des continuums ojibwé et cri-innu, a pour étymon lointain la racine protoalgonquienne *pešiwa. D’abord employée au xviiie siècle par des marchands de Nouvelle-France comme dénomination du lynx et de sa pelleterie, l’unité lexicale s’intègre dans le phrasème laid comme un pichou dès le xixe siècle. Attesté depuis le xxe siècle comme désignation d’une sorte de mocassin, pichou fait aujourd’hui aussi office de terme d’ethnologie. Cet article offre un premier portrait cohérent et accessible de l’état des connaissances sur l’histoire de ce nom et de son sémantisme, en mettant au jour quelques données nouvelles.
