Abstract
Lors de la messe de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste, le 24 juin 1851, les paroissiens remarquent la présence d’un jeune représentant saint Jean-Baptiste qui aurait également marché dans le défilé. Cet événement marque le début d’une longue aventure de la représentation de saint Jean-Baptiste dans le défilé de la Fête nationale à Montréal. Clôturant le défilé pendant plus d’un siècle, les allégories du saint sont représentées par de jeunes enfants accompagnés d’un mouton, d’adultes et de statues. Adoré par la foule et idole des enfants, saint Jean-Baptiste devient objet de moquerie et de honte selon les époques. Au début, sa représentation soude le groupe, puis elle en viendra à provoquer des tensions entre les organisateurs, le clergé, les sociétaires, les publics et les médias.
