Abstract
Les voies de la recherche pluridisciplinaire sont impénétrables. Elles le sont encore plus lorsqu’une trouvaille émerge en dehors de toute attente et de toute logique et lorsqu’elle apporte une solution nouvelle (simple et complète) à un problème structural ancien et non résolu. C’est l’une des définitions de la sérendipité en matière de sciences humaines et sociales. L’analyse structurale complète qu’un ethnologue québécois (Jean-Pierre Pichette) a procurée du conte type AT 910B (L’Observance des conseils du maître) éveille chez un philologue médiéviste une « sagacité accidentelle » mais fructueuse pour résoudre l’une des questions les plus rebattues et les plus impénétrables de la littérature médiévale française : l’origine non pas du graal mais du récit intégral où apparaît pour la première fois « un graal » dans un récit commandé par les conseils d’un maître.
