Abstract
Les premières biographies de Gustave Doré soulignent la précocité de l’artiste, mettant en avant l'importance du cadre culturel et social de son enfance dans la formation de son imaginaire artistique. Elles ont forgé le mythe d'un génie autonome et autodidacte, minimisant l’importance des modèles de Grandville ou Töpffer pourtant décisifs. Ces biographies rédigées aux lendemains du conflit franco-prussien, participent également d’un récit patriotique, donnant à la séquence alsacienne de Doré une valeur matricielle. Bien que souvent exagéré, ce cadre culturel ne peut être négligé : La popularité des Légendes d’Alsace, alors collectées et publiées, ont durablement marqué l’imaginaire merveilleux et fantastique du jeune artiste. La cathédrale, que Doré fréquentait quotidiennement, n’est pas sans lien avec le goût de l’artiste pour l’architecture médiévale et le récit épique. Les célébrations autour du 400e anniversaire de l’invention de l’imprimerie par Gutenberg, ont, quant à elles, donné l’occasion d’un récit vocationnel, et posé l’un des paradoxes de la carrière de l’artiste, tiraillé entre le métier d’illustrateur et le désir de reconnaissance artistique.
