Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Neurology was launched in 1988. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of neurology is divided into 14 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS James David GuestJames David GuestDr James Guest, MD, Ph.D., FAANS is a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami, USA, and The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Dr Guest performs translational and clinical research predominantly in spinal cord injury. He received Neurosurgical Board certification in Canada and the US and advanced training in spinal neurosurgery. His research focus is therapeutics translation, from pre-clinical through pivotal clinical trials. Studies include drugs and biologics for neuroprotection and promotion of neuroplasticity as well as neuromodulation, rehabilitation, and combined therapeutics. The recent studies include the development of therapeutic exosomes, creating frameworks for systems biology in paralyzing diseases, and neuromodulation. He has received funding from the Department of Defense and NIH, for whom he serves as a Study section reviewer. He serves on the Grants Working Group of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine and with the FDA to review biologics, cell, and gene therapy projects across a range of diseases. He is the co-Chair of the North American Clinical Trials Network. Ona BloomOna BloomDr Bloom is a Professor at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, USA, the research enterprise of Northwell Health, where she established and directs the Lab of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) research. She is appointed as Professor of Molecular Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, USA. Dr Bloom also serves as the director of research for the Dept. of PM&R and is an affiliated researcher at the Spinal Cord Injury Damage Center at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY, USA. The goal of Dr Bloom's research is to identify mechanisms and biomarkers of immune dysfunction in people with SCI and to test interventional strategies to promote immune function after SCI to improve life expectancy, recovery and quality of life. Dr Bloom's SCI research program has received external funding from the US Department of Defense, Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program, and New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Board. She was elected as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society in 2020. She has served as a scientific reviewer for many organizations, including the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, Wings for Life, Paralyzed Veterans of America, NIH, NSF and the VA. She currently serves as the Director of the International Symposium for Neural Regeneration (ISNR). Dr Bloom obtained her PhD in neuroscience from The Rockefeller University, USA, under the supervision of the late Dr Paul Greengard and performed her postdoctoral studies in immunology and cell biology at the Yale University School of Medicine, USA, under the supervision of Dr Ira Mellman. Riccardo SoffiettiRiccardo SoffiettiRiccardo Soffietti is Professor of Neurology and Neuro-Oncology at University, and former Head of Dept. Neuro-Oncology, City of Health and Science Hospital, Turin, Italy. He held positions such as President of European Association of Neuro-Oncology, Chairperson of Scientific Panel of Neuro-Oncology of European Academy of Neurology and of Research Group Neuro-Oncology of World Federation of Neurology, Member of the Steering Committee of Brain Tumor Group of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, and Member of the International Group Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology. The specific research experience includes designing and coordinating clinico-translational trials in gliomas, lymphomas, ependymomas, medulloblastomas, brain metastasis and neoplastic meningitis with new drugs and monitoring treatment effects with advanced neuroimaging. He published 228 papers in highly impacted scientific journals, 10 books and 39 chapters of books with international editor. He is currently Executive Editor of Neuro-Oncology (OUP), and Editor of Sections on Brain Tumors of Current Opinion in Neurology and Current Treatment Options in Neurology, Associate Editor of Cancerscand Frontiers in Oncology. He is a Referee of many international journals. Mark W. GreenMark W. GreenDr Mark W. Green is the Emeritus Director of Headache and Pain Medicine and Professor of Neurology, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, USA. He is the Vice Chair of Neurology for Professional Development and Alumni Relations. He is certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, where he is a fellow, and in Headache Medicine through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. He is the President of the World Headache Society. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of Medical Education at City University of New York School of Medicine, USA. Dr Green graduated from Case Western Reserve University, USA, and then received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, USA. He received his neurology training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and during that period worked in the Montefiore Headache Unit of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was later appointed director of that unit. He came to Columbia University, USA, in 1981, and then New York Medical College, USA. He returned to Columbia University in 2000 to organize a section on headache and facial pain in the department of neurology and started one of the first UCNS headache fellowships in the country. There he was Director of Headache Medicine and Clinical Professor of Neurology (in Neurology, Anesthesiology and Dentistry) at the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the College of Dental Medicine. In 2009, he came to Mt Sinai to develop a program and fellowship in headache medicine. Dr Green was one of the founding editors of CEPHALAGIA in 1979, the international headache journal. He also served as the Associate Editor of Headache, the journal of the American Headache Society. He has published several textbooks on headache. Dr Green has been active in the practice of headache and facial pain since 1978. He has lectured throughout the world on this subject and has written numerous articles and books on various subjects concerning headache and facial pain.
