Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à l’invention du Vieux-Montréal, secteur protégé en raison de ses qualités patrimoniales en 1964 par le gouvernement du Québec. Il cherche toutefois à dépasser l’étude de ce moment charnière pour inscrire le processus de patrimonialisation dans le temps long. Plus précisément, il s’intéresse aux représentations afin de comprendre la construction de l’image du Vieux-Montréal comme quartier historique. Le dépouillement de guides touristiques publiés sur Montréal de 1840 à 2000 permet de saisir les représentations de la ville données à voir aux visiteurs qui ont arpenté le secteur depuis le 19e siècle. L’analyse fait ressortir quatre moments qui sont autant d’étapes ayant mené à l’invention du Vieux-Montréal.
