Abstract
L’histoire ferroviaire du Québec demeure mal connue. Destinés au grand public quand ils n’émanent pas de la recherche anglophone, dominés d’ailleurs par l’histoire économique et politique, la plupart des travaux sur les chemins de fer québécois (et canadiens) disent très peu de choses de la vie ferroviaire complexe du 19e siècle. En adoptant les perspectives d’une histoire sociale et culturelle, cet article reconstitue l’univers physique, social et sensoriel des gares et des wagons de l’époque « primitive » du chemin de fer québécois, le deuxième tiers du 19e siècle étant marqué par son apparition, son implantation et ses premières appropriations par les populations locales.
